A man was tragically killed today on I-5 in Pierce County near the Tacoma dome after he exited his car on the snowy roadways.

At approximately 6:58 p.m. tonight a call was received by the state patrol of a one car pedestrian fatality on I-5 at “L” street in Tacoma. Jae Y. Lee, a 62 year old male, was outside his 2003 Chevy S-10 pickup for unknown reasons on the left side of the road. Jerry L. Smith, a 56 year old male from Olympia, was driving southbound near the left side of the roadway when he struck Lee. Tragically Lee was unable to survive his injuries and died at the scene.

The state patrol urges motorists to be prepared and safe when traveling during these snowy and icy conditions.  Make sure your tires are made for snow and ice.  You can take your car to a local tire shop if you are unsure.  You must also have sufficient tread on your tire.  Pack a “winter car kit” in your vehicle containing food, water, warm clothes, jumper cables, cat litter, shovel and ice scraper in case you become stranded or are stuck in backups on the roadway.  If you are not comfortable with driving on snow and ice find other means of travel; ride the bus, ride with a friend, etc.  When conditions are severe it may be best to stay home.

Motorists are reminded to be patient and allow plenty of space between them and the car in front of them.  If you are involved in a collision, get to the right shoulder of the roadway as quick as possible and remain in your car until help arrives.  If you must chain up find a safe place, such as a parking lot, to put the chains on.  Never chain up on the shoulder of a roadway.   To check ahead for winter road conditions and get more winter driving tips go to the Department of Transportation website at www.dot.wa.gov.
