Washington state is home to thousands of public waterways. Our waterways are second only to highways in terms of the number of accidental deaths occurring on them. The main causes of boating accidents in the country are attributed to operator negligence: excessive speed, no proper lookout, operator inattention, and general carelessness. Excessive alcohol consumption contributed to 17 percent of all boating accidents.
Two-thirds of boating accident victims drowned, and 90 percent of those victims were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident. In 2008, 11 children under the age of 13 lost their lives while boating, and, of those 11, seven died from drowning.
The most common types of boats involved in reported accidents were open motorboats (42%), personal watercraft (Jet Skis and Sea Doos) (27%) and cabin motorboats (14%). Increases were observed in the number of reported fatalities involving cabin motorboats (64) and canoes and kayaks (87) from 2002.
